Envying Vishnu
by Astrid Cabral. Translated by Alexis Levitin.
I will never escape
envying Vishnu
his multiple arms.
If I were Vishnu, I used to think,
I wouldn’t have to choose
between lulling the baby asleep
or scribbling down a poem.
There would always be simultaneous hands weaving
threads of life, threads of words.
