Tangoby David Slavitt
If a Jew learns the tango, is he still
a Jew? Probably not an orthodox,
but the rest of us still share some disinclinations.
We may play tennis, baseball, football even,
and climb mountains; we perform in jazz bands
(or did when there were jazz bands); but this dance,
blatant, concupiscent, celebrates
the sorrows of flesh to music nothing like
the song which is Solomon's. Klezmer doesn't cut it.
I listen to tangos with eyes closed and can see
the glorious trayf world outside the law
that some of us allow ourselves to long for.
